Foster FAQs

  • The range of pets spans to each end of the spectrum. There can be small kittens/puppies, with a mother who need a quiet place to grow. There can be kittens/puppies that somehow have ended up motherless, who need to be bottle fed. There can be older barn kittens or puppies that have experienced cruelty or neglect that need to be socialized and their trust in humans regained.

  • The foster parent is responsible for the basics…Shelter, love, care and transportation as necessary. This includes transportation to and from adoption events or vet appointments.

Foster parents are not responsible for vet care but they must use one of our approved vets or be authorized to use another. - The shelter would provide food, medical exams, vaccinations, medications, and the spay/neuter surgery.

Administering medications if necessary. Documenting any health concerns so that they can be discussed with the medical staff, and notifying the medical staff of such concerns.

Fosters must keep the foster animal(s) in their home for the time period agreed upon with the staff in charge of foster care. If an emergency comes up, or the foster volunteer will be leaving town, they must contact Great Tails Animal Rescue to coordinate other foster arrangements.

We will provide food and other necessities (i.e. Collar, Leash, bedding, kennel, toys and treats) as they become available.

  • Absolutely!

We see many fosters take in fur babies and fall in love with them but we also know you’re looking for the right fit too, so you can foster and continue looking for the pet you ultimately want to adopt.

  • Our application process allows you to select the animal type(s) you’re most interested in taking care of.

We want to make sure that everyone is healthy and happy and understanding your home needs and preferred animals is part of that.

  • At minimum, pets stay with a foster for 10 days.

On average, we see most foster pets adopted to their fur-ever homes within 3-4 weeks.

  • We know there are favorite breeds and we can’t control the breeds of animals we bring in. We ask our fosters to be flexible and understand that we are taking the animal as they are vs. providing care for specific animal breeds.

We will always be open to exceptions for health, allergies or safety concerns.

  • We can support finding a new foster to take in the animal or explore training opportunities to help the animal adjust to a new home.

  • We call this a foster fail and say it with love!

If the fur baby you’re caring for is the right fit, we’ll happily complete the paperwork to make it official

  • Yes! We will still need pet fosters to support animals that come to us at Great Tails Animal Rescue.

The building will have a pet capacity limit but will reduce the strain on our volunteer foster families, especially when we have a 10 day waiting period between foster pets in homes for health and safety.
