Surrendering an Animal
How do I surrender an animal to Great Tails Animal Rescue?
To begin the surrender process, please call us at (218) 398-6191. We will gather information about the animal and then reach out to our network of foster homes to check for placement availability. If a foster home is available, we will schedule a surrender and intake appointment.
Do animals need to be spayed/neutered or vaccinated before being surrendered?
No. We do not require animals to be spayed, neutered, or vaccinated before surrender. We understand that many situations, whether involving a personal pet, a family member’s animal, or a stray that has been found, can make it difficult to access or afford these services. Once an animal is in our care, we take care of all necessary medical needs, including vaccinations and spay or neuter procedures, to help prepare them for a healthy future and a successful adoption.
What happens during the intake appointment?
During intake, we complete both a medical and behavioral assessment to better understand the animal’s needs. This helps us place them in the most appropriate foster home and prepare them for adoption.
What if the animal shows signs of aggression?
If an animal shows signs of aggression during intake, as outlined in our Aggressive Animal Prevention Policy, we will stop the intake process. We will then provide recommendations and resources to help guide you toward alternative placement options.
Is there a fee to surrender an animal?
We request an in-kind donation of $50 per animal at the time of surrender. An “animal” is defined as one dog, cat or small domestic pet, or a mother dog or cat with their litter of puppies or kittens.
I found a stray animal. Can I bring it directly to you?
The first step is to contact your local law enforcement. They can guide you on proper next steps and help ensure the animal is handled according to local regulations before any placement is considered.
