She has had to work on potty training as she was mostly outside prior to coming to rescue. Her foster said she did really well and then they had company and she had a couple of accidents they believe was due to overstimulation, she has been accident free for 5 days now. Callie HATES crates she will destroy them if she is left in one. Callie also knows how to open doors if they are not plain old doorknobs, so her foster also has to deadbolt the door if they leave home. Liberty

Adopted: 1/24/2021

Pet ID: 117

For those that have been following us, here is Liberty-
This sweet face is a 2.5 year old boxer/pit mix. She came into our program almost six weeks ago with her 7 puppies, after her owner abandoned her and a kind neighbor brought her to us. Upon intake, she was severely emaciated and her first exam showed presence of worms, so she began a week of broad spectrum dewormer.
Through the weeks up to now, we have had her on special food and supplements so she could gain weight and feed her babies. Through it all, she has been the most GRATEFUL little girl, and a wonderful mama.
A little bit about her personality: she is SUPER affectionate to people once she gets to know them and proper introduction is best, as she has shown signs of abuse. She really likes kids, her foster has a 12 and 7 year old. She is praise and food-driven, and will do her very best to make amends if she does something she's not supposed to. (She's still quite a puppy!) Her favorite things are playing tug of war and her squeak toys. She does well on a leash and harness with reminders, and she has been working with a training collar, as she REALLY likes the thought of chickens at her fosters house. She does fine with other dogs once she gets to know them. For cats, she has a very strong curiosity that verges on being rough; she is being worked on her manners with them. Liberty is mostly housebroken, and does well in a crate.

Marco

Adopted: 1/30/2021

Pet ID: 179

Introducing Roran #178(black n white)and Marco#179(all black)! These brothers were dumped, how long ago, we don't know. They have obviously experienced trauma as they were very scared, cold and hungry. A good Samaritan was able to live trap them and brought them to us three weeks ago. They had their first vet appointment, both are feline leukemia neg and was given their first distemper and rabies shots. The vet said they are VERY healthy and approximately 6mos old. When we first got them, they were very scared and skittish. Their foster parents have been working very hard to make them feel safe and secure. They have come along way and are finally coming out of their shells. Now they purr and rub up against you and Love tummy scratches. Still skittish to be picked up, but we will continue to work with them. They absolutely love their foster sister and show no signs of aggressive behavior with the other cats or dogs in the home. They will be wonderful sweet additions to a family willing to have patience on giving them the time to feel at home and safe.

Loki

Adopted: 3/1/2021

Pet ID:  184

What do you get when you cross a German shepherd mix with a labradoodle? An awesome mutt named Loki and he's got the best characteristics from each of those breeds to prove it. He's smart, sweet, and he has styling hair! He came to Great Tails as a four- to five-month-old with no training at all but he's a quick study and teaching him the basics has been a breeze. It only took a few days to house train him and he's even learned to nudge jingle bells by the door to let everyone know when he wants to go outside. He's also crate trained and is the type of dog that goes in his kennel all on his own when he wants to chill out. Loki came to us as a blank-slate so he doesn't have any bad habits like begging for table scraps and he's never been allowed to jump on furniture - you can't miss what you never had! Loki is submissive but not timid. He instinctively retrieves toys and would likely be a good hunting dog if properly trained. Loki gets along well with other dogs and kids. We haven't had an opportunity to see how he interacts with cats but he did get to meet some foster bunnies and he was VERY interested in them. At this point I wouldn’t trust him around little critters that would be fun to chase but he is so smart and eager to please I wouldn’t be surprised if he could be taught to peacefully co-exist with them. As a doodle-mix you might wonder if Loki sheds. He seems to shed less than a shepherd or lab but more than most doodles. His hair is soft, thick, long, and wavy - grooming his unique coat will be something his new owner will have to experiment with. Loki was stinky and matted when we first got him. Many of his mats have been trimmed or brushed out but a few still remain. It may be best to have a professional groomer clip his hair short when it warms up so he can have a hair-do do-over. He’s got the kind of coat that will require a fair amount of up-keep. Face, foot, and butt trims every couple months or so at the very least. Loki is neutered and up to date on his shots. He’s about six months old now and he weighs just over 40 pounds. He would be a great addition to any family but someone who has the time and interest in training him to his full potential will be best for him. He is a diamond in the "ruff".

Sammy

Adopted: 3/9/2021

Pet ID: 129

Sammy is a 9 year old Orange and white DSH tabby. Sammy was surrendered after his owner could no longer care for him at the nursing home. He was not satisfied with the attention he was getting so he decided he would wonder throughout the home to other residents rooms to receive the extra attention he was missing out on. He is loves people, but he would like to be the only animal in the home. Sammy has had urinary issues in the past so he is currently switching his diet from a urinary food to a weight management food as he no long needs the urinary food. However, Sammy is a hefty boy at 21lbs so he will need to continue on a weight management diet. Sammy does have dental problems and his new owners will need to keep up with Sammy’s dental care. Sammy is feline leukemia negative, up to date on shots, and he is neutered.

Maggie

Adopted 3/9/2021

Peanut

Adopted: 4/6/2021

Peggy'skittens(3of5).jpg

Pet ID: 212

Peanut was not claimed and is now available for adoption. He is 1 to 2 years old, has been neutered, given his first shots, tested neg on heartworm and lymes, and has been dewormed. It appears this sweet lil guy has had a traumatic life. He exhibits signs of physical abuse and of course, was at large on his own for at least a week maybe longer. While he has been in foster care, here is what we've learned. He seems to be mostly housetrained if one is diligent to take him out. Doesn't mind being in a crate, is indifferent to cats, willing to tolerate other dogs if he doesn't have to compete with them for attention with his person. He seems to be very loving and bonds quickly with a lady, but men and kids, he is terrified of and will try to bite if a child or man tries to touch him. Sadly, he has most likely been abused by a male. The vet feels he may benefit from anxiety meds to help calm him to learn to trust again. It would take someone with lots of love n patience to give to get him to not be fearful of men anymore. We feel a home without kids is the best option and a single lady would be ideal.

Just Look at this Gorgeous Girl! Miss Bristol is all ready for her forever home. Approx, 1-2 yrs old, UTD on shots, has been spayed and is litterbox trained. She's a little shy at first due to some obvious mistreatment and being on her own, but she is truly a sweetheart. A very mellow, quiet cat, doesn't seem to bother anything and is nonreactive (a Lil nervous, perhaps) around strange cats and dogs, but with soft introductions and a period of adjusting, she would probably do just fine. She enjoys getting lots of attention. Those beautiful light blue eyes, just melts your heart. Bristol's ID # is 210. If interested in adopting Bristol, place and application today!

Lady

Adopted: 4/26/2021

Pet ID: 175

lady2.jpg

Lady came back into foster care twice the first time, due to playing to rough with her new sister who was smaller than her. Lady also had a lot of anxiety when her new owner was not right with her. The second time due to her high prey drive during walks.

Lady is a 10 1/2 month old German Shepherd / Golden Retriever mix. When she came into rescue within 3 days she could not walk on her back leg and she would yelp if she was touched by the vet. She tested positive for lymes and was treated for 30 days. She has been spayed and is UTD on shots. Lady loves kids and other dogs. She is very protective and patient with toddlers. Lady CANNOT go into a home with cats as she has a very high pray drive and will not redirect. She will not do well in a home with smaller dogs due to rough play, she is currently fostered with dogs 7+ years old that are not energetic and has been great with them. She is a loyal family dog and loves to be with you. She would prefer a home where she isn't left alone a lot as she has separation anxiety. She does well in a crate for shorter periods of time. Playing fetch and destroying her squeaky toys are her favorite past times. She knows sit, shake, down, lay, leave it, and come. We are working on her recall outside as once she gets on a scent she does not redirect if she is off leash. Lady loves to go out on the leash and wait for the kids to get off the bus with her foster mom. We have been working on appropriate chewing toys as she will steal toy wooden blocks from the toy box. She is also learning manners as she gets so excited when new people come and she will jump up on them. Lady is looking for a active home that will challenge her mind. She is very smart and expressive. Lady’s adoption fee is $300+ tax.

pe.jpg

Pet ID: 209

FINALLY ready for ADOPTION!! Remember Pearl???? Sorry we haven't given an update in a while. If you recall, Pearl came into Rescue almost 3 mos ago. Very sick, so malnourished, her lil body stopped growing. She was the size of a 3 mos old kitten yet at least 6 mos of age. It was determined she has an upper respiratory virus. A type of virus that unfortunately, she will always have symptoms of to some degree. She was on 6 wks of continuous antibiotics and it did help tremendously. She has doubled in size, and close to 6 lbs now. However, she continues to weep from one eye, and on occasion, will make weird breathing noises. It appears it's all sinus/head related as her lungs have been clear on x-rays. She was finally able to receive her vaccinations and has gotten spayed. She is the sweetest Love and very playful. She can also be a lil naughty as no small object is left unplayed with. Your pens are not safe. But once she has had her fun, she is ready to climb on your lap and snuggle and sleep. Pearl will need to be considered a 'special needs' kitty as her virus symptoms will need to be maintained. Her face needs cleaned everyday due to the weeping and it can cause irritation to her skin if not cleaned off. The vet told us it's very likely she could have worsened symptoms at times that will require another round of antibiotics. How often, no one can predict. Our Vet has seen cats like her that have lived full and happy lives in spite of a few bumps in the road on occasion. She is on Lysine supplements to help keep her immune system strong. It is crushed up and added into her food and she takes it just fine. The virus doesn't appear to be contagious to other cats who have been vaccinated. (She has not been around any cats that are unvaccinated)She gets along great with her other cat and dog foster siblings. A bit nervous and scared of new people at first as she will run and hide when a stranger walks in, but warms up quickly.

Pet ID: 249

Meet Casper! Pet ID#249. Casper is a 1-2yr old male, German Shepherd/Samoyed/Husky mix. He is Neutered and UTD on vaccines. A very sweet and curious young man. Through no fault of his own, his previous owners are allergic to his beautiful fur. Casper has lots of energy and a high prey drive. He loves to sit in the yard and listen and watch the wildlife. He will go 'on the hunt' if he gets the chance. He needs some more leash training and his curiosity fuels his high energy and makes him pull hard. He is very smart and attentive and learns quick, (he's perfect at sitting when told)just needs someone willing to train him further and expend the energy he has. Once he has had his fun, he loves to relax and cuddle with his person. He seems to be scared of storm drains and can be a bit food aggressive towards a nosy dog trying to take a sniff. Other than that he seems to get along great with other dogs and people. Has never been around cats so that is an unknown but with his prey drive, one would need to be extra cautious with would be feline friends.

Hades

Adopted: 6/30/2021

Pet ID: 120

Hi I'm Hades. Don't let my name fool you- I really am a sweet boy! I am 6 month old Boxer/Husky/Chow mix. I am current on all vaccines including lymes and I’m neutered. I am decent with my nail trims and I love playing with toys--so much that I will hoard them. I will also climb in your lap and stare at you with my bright green eyes and fill your soul with love.

I have been a farm dog my whole life so I'm not use to a leash as much as city dogs- I only have to use one when I go to the vet. I don't pull- I just don't want to be on it so it takes some coaxing to get me to walk with you. I listen very well and know basic commands--sit, lay down, come, go to bed (I'm crate trained), and leave it. I am also house broken. I like to try to play with kitties due to my prey drive, but I don't hurt them. If left unattended I will go after chickens, I like them too much. If I'm being watched I recall with my name or "no". I run in the middle of the pack- I will try to be the boss- but if put in my place I accept it.

Maddie

Adopted: 7/24/2021

Pet ID: 243

Meet Maddie! She is a big 85 pound, 3 year old Chesapeake Retriever/Lab mix with lots of energy and love. She is an excellent indoor pet, though she loves to go outside, run laps around the yard, and fetch a stick in the lake. She likes to takes walks but was never on a leash, so she still pulls hard. She is trainable, but teaching her to walk on a leash will take some time. She is well potty trained, knows basic commands like sit, stay, come, and responds well to scolding. She only chews her toys, but she does love to chew. She also loves to kiss and cuddle all the time. When you pet her, she flops down so you can rub her belly. She definitely wants to be part of the family, so she needs a home where she can be with people. She won't do well alone outside. She gets along well with her 9 y.o. black lab foster sister, but would not do well with an "Alpha Female". She likes to announce visitors or noises with her loud, deep bark but is quiet otherwise. She sleeps peacefully in her crate each night or when left in the house for a few hours. She would be best suited with a younger family that can match her energy and strength and who wants a big, loving dog to cuddle with. She is very affectionate and happy to lay around the house with us all day, but she would love to have someone take her outside and play with her a lot too. She will make an excellent family pet with her playful disposition and strong loyalty to her family.

Bandit

Adopted: 8/10/2021

Pet ID: 187

After months of medical care Miss Bandit is finally ready for adoption. Bandit was one of the dogs from the senior dog breeding operation from this spring. She was in the worst condition as she was found frozen to the ground by a neighbor. Bandit is a 10 year old Bulldog/Boston Terrier/ Pug mix. When she came into rescue she could not use her left hind leg due to a pellet that shattered her kneecap. She also has several other pellets with one that is in her vertebrae. The vet recommended leaving them in as removal may cause more damage. She also had a severe UTI, Cherry eye, anaplasmosis, and Lymes. She does have some blindness in her right eye caused by an ulcer from her chronic cherry eye. She will be on a urinary food for the rest of her life, as her bladder walls are very thin and she is susceptible to infections. Bandit would like to go to a home that doesn't have young kids as she is nervous of their high activity levels. She loves going for short walks, she would love to go for longer ones if her back leg wouldn't give her so much trouble. She is good with cats and selective on other dogs. She is nervous meeting strangers, but will warm up after some treats are dispersed. Bandit loves hide and seek with treats, she will find every last one. She would love to retire and be someone's companion/ snuggle buddy. Bandit is UTD on shots and has be spayed.

mar.jpg

Pet ID: 182

The Story of Margaret:

Margaret came into rescue in late January during a bitter cold snap, emaciated and completely scared of people. Her foster figures she'd been on her own for sometime and has shown signs of being abused, such as jumping when there is a loud noise and running away when you get near her, (unless she knows you and it's on her own terms.) Throughout the last few months this 2-4 year old sweetheart has been spayed and gotten her vaccines, and has learned to trust her foster family. (She even let our photographer take her photo!) She LOVES other cats and is very dependent on them, so she will need a home with another cat that is friendly. She has no issues with dogs at all and uses a litter box with no problem. She will be best in a home that has older children. Her new owner should be one that understands cats and knows that she will need time to get used to her household. Margaret's adoption fee has been donated by an anonymous donor.

Penny

Adopted: 9/11/2021

Pet ID: 343

Meet Penny (AKA Miss Penny Pie because she’s as sweet as pie)! She’s a 4-year-old purebred Wirehair Pointer that is looking for an active forever home! She is completely housebroken. She likes car rides because she loves feeling the breeze through her beard but if you can’t take her along she will sadly watch you leave through the window (but will be a good girl and sleep on the couch the entire time you’re gone). She’s recovering from her last ever litter of puppies and Lyme Disease but, oh boy, is she getting her energy back! She is an excellent family dog - loves kids, other dogs, and anyone who likes to cuddle and give pets. She would NOT be good with cats or chickens or any other small critter because this master huntress wants to play with them hard. Especially their heads. In her mouth. Her prey-drive is high. She also is an escape artist so you’ll need a tall (over 4 foot) fence because she will jump over as soon as you’re not looking. A tie-out or outdoor kennel would work for her too. And your gate latches must be secure because she will unlatch them. And your screen doors locked because she knows how to use the door handle. Needless to say, she is extremely smart but also eager to please so she will most definitely take to any and all training you want to give her. An ideal home would be: a family with another dog that likes to play, people that run/walk every day, and/or bird hunters. Penny will be spayed Sept 9, and will be available soon after.

He needs lots of things to chew on and constant supervision as he will get into mischief, right away. He loves his big foster dog brothers and sisters who are 10 times his size but that doesn't stop him. He thinks he is a big dog too! He even loves all the foster kitties in the home.
